Abstract
Purpose: This research aims to identify the physio-psychological effects of applying a qi massage program as an independent complementary intervention for employees with hypertension in a workplace. Methods: A quasi-experimental design was employed using a nonequivalent control group with pre- and post-tests. The study was performed from August 18 to October 10, 2008 on hypertensive employees being treated with a qi massage program in a company. The control group was recruited first to prevent treatment diffusion. The experimental group was subsequently recruited and received individual treatment for 30 minutes. Collected data was analyzed using SPSS16.0 version. χ2-test, Mann-Whitney U test, Wilcoxon signed ranks test, Fisher’s exact test and paired t-test were implemented in order to examine the effects of individual intervention on patients who are treated with the qi massage program. Results: The experimental group showed a greater improvement in systolic blood pressure, diastolic pressure, stress, and quality of life than did the control group. Conclusion: A qi massage program may be implemented as a complementary intervention to effectively treat hypertensive persons.

Abstract
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of patients attempting suicide and to analyze treatment determination factors for patients with mental illness who go to an emergency center for treatment. Methods: Data collected from 117 suicide attempters who visited Busan Regional Emergency Medical Center were analyzed using frequency, percentage, χ²-test with SPSS/WIN 15.0. Results: Only 31 cases consulted with the psychiatric department; the other attempters’ refused to consult (26.5%). Among the 31 attempters who consulted, 23 cases (74.2%) were suffering from depression. The most common reason (38.6%) suicidal attempters gave to refuse psychiatric treatment was “I’m not mad. I don’t need the psychiatric treatment.” Treatment determination factors for mental illness were religion (p<.001), past history (p=.017), financial satisfaction (p=.048), previous history of suicidal attempts (p=.006), sleep disturbance (p<.001), expression of suicide (p=.010), and type of leaving the emergency room (p=.020, p<.001). Conclusion: Results suggest that people frequently misunderstand psychiatric treatment which leads to their refusal to accept psychiatric treatment. Therefore hospitals need to develop standard guidelines and procedures for suicidal attempters with the collaboration of emergency and psychiatry departments. In addition, medical teams need to provide attempters appropriate information and encourage them to actively seek psychiatric treatment.

Abstract
Purpose: The purposes of this study were to identify the perceived nursing needs and the differences by general characteristics of parents of infants in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and to provide useful evidences developing a new intervention for family-centered care in NICU. Methods: A convenience sample of 121 parents of infants in NICU was used and the participants asked to complete the Korean version of NICU Family Needs Inventory (NFNI) from April to May, 2014. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test and ANOVA. Results: The participants reported high average score in the perceived nursing needs. In subscales, needs for assurance rated highest score and needs for information, proximity, support, and comfort were followed. Mothers reported higher nursing needs score than fathers except the subscale of support. Conclusion: The findings suggest that nurses in NICU actively provide information about treatment, nursing, results of laboratory tests, and current status to give reassurance to parents. Not only providing informational support of parents of NICU infants, but also finding methods to contact to parents is necessary. In addition, nurses need to provide optimized intervention in current healthcare system and hospital environment.

Abstract
Purpose: The purposes of this study were to evaluate the degree of social support, self-esteem, and motivation for rehabilitation in stroke patients and examine correlations between activities of daily living and study variables. Furthermore, this study explored factors that influence on activities of daily living. Methods: The study population was 192 stroke patients admitted in two general hospitals and two rehabilitation hospitals in M city. We collected the data using the structured questionnaires from July 11 to September 30, 2013. Results: The higher degree of social support, self-esteem, motivation for rehabilitation, the higher performance level for activities of daily living. Influencing factors of activities of daily living in the participants were motivation for rehabilitation(β=.32, p<.001) and social support(β=.31, p<.001). The model explained 45.9% of the variance. Conclusion: This study shows that intrinsic motivation of change in stroke patients themselves, a strong will to return to society and social supports are important factors on activities of daily living. Therefore, it is needed to develop a systemic nursing intervention improving activities of daily living in stroke patients through positive social support from patients’ family members and health care providers.
